Performance analysis report of Rahbar Coaching, Darbhanga [Oct 2009 - May 2010]

-- Mohd Hassan Arshad (mdhasanarshad@gmail.com)

Rahbar coaching center at Darbhanga started in October 2009. It is managed by local organization MAAS (mass association of advancement of society, lead by Noorullah Sb (an old alig), businessman by profession and active in the field of deeni and contemporary educational projects for the local community.

Around 60 students (25 students in 8th, 25 in 9th and 10 in 10th class) took admission in the center. After 2 months strength was reduced to 40.  The main reason of dropped out was extremely weak background, lack of interest from students & guardian and not being ready to take the pressure of monthly test. Some of them were reached by the local committee member but couldn’t get the response from student and guardian.

The monthly tests were conducted and student performances were monitored. Some of them showed remarkable improvement. Here is the sample of the performance tracking plots for one of them.

Darbhanga Coaching, Faizur's performance
The motive behind the recording the marks and looking at the trend is to get the potentials of individual students, train and facilitate them according to their caliber and show them the future path to their career. For example above student (getting around 80%) can be encouraged to go for higher studies and can be coached for 11th /Diploma Engineering entrances/Rahmani 30 etc. They can go for normal next stage studies class 11th at darbhanga in our supervision (or at our coaching if we are able to start 11th, 12th coaching).

Some of them picked up from 30-40% marks to 65-80% in the monthly test. But majority of students didn’t show any trend or are consistently under performing.

Group of non performers needs encouragement and support from us. They need extra sessions to build their fundamentals. During my meeting with students they agreed that their background is very week especially in mathematics. If we want them to improve significantly we have to give them extra sessions. Normal session of one lecture per day for science and mathematic is not enough for them.

Action plan:

Step 1. First of we need to instill the confidence in students that they can be good performer if they put little bit extra effort. By doing this we will be making them ready to come for extra session devoted for the basics.

Step 2: Extra sessions: There is a plan to add one more period and devote in to build the foundation of students in mathematics and science. So, apart from 3 period (science, math’s, and English/social science), there will be one extra period for basic to boost the background of weak student.
Extra session can be conducted on Sunday for a small selected group to be given by volunteers. We need to prepare list of volunteers who can do this job. Insha-allah I will start with myself during my stay in darbhanga in July-August. Local brothers from darbhanga are requested the join the team of volunteers.
Quit smoking, now!

After announcement of results of matriculation, it was a moment of Joy for Ehtesham. Not only he passed the examination with first division but was the topper of his school. Educated people from neighborhood were greeting him for his outstanding performance and advising to pursue higher studies with science subjects due to greater prospects.

Every father dreams big for his ward, but in a hope to get big, Ehtesham’s father don’t want his son to be unemployed for another five years. Even completion of degree there doesn’t guarantee employment, then how can Ehtesham’s father take this risk when his own brother after completion of his master degree struggled a lot and at the end is running a grocery shop.

The adamant father convinced Ehtesham to work in one of his friend’s cloths shop and take admission in commerce or arts as getting a degree in these streams require little effort.

Every year, in absence of proper guidance and information many Ehteshams take admission in commerce or arts as they believe it requires less effort.

Do you really think getting a degree in arts or commerce requires less effort…?

With such an attitude how you expect from numerous of other Ehteshams to get a job after completing his graduation.

There was much hue and cry when result of CSE-2009 was declared. Owing to our poor proportion our expectation from 6.49% graduates is very high. Do we have something to offer them?

In recent past much has been discussed to increase our share in Engineering or Medical profession.
Do we have something to discuss to increase our share in other professions?

It is never too late to start for a good cause……!

It was the summary of our discussion with my friends on the same evening, when Jharkhand Academic Council announced SSC results and which reminded me of next door boy Ehtesham, when I finished my points, one of my friends commented, “Impressive Thoughts….!” Your concern over this issue is to impress us and you did, but what next.
My other friend said we are late for an important match of T20 world cup. For a few seconds I was speechless, and then hesitantly accepted the truth.

Next day again we were together for evening tea, before I could continue previous day discussion we started discussing on one fatwa which created usual stirs in media.
That evening I was thinking, what distracted us from continuing last day’s discussion.
Was that news related with fatwa prevented us to discuss on educational empowerment or we are not motivated enough to prepare blueprint of our own thoughts.

If I am right, on every corner of Muslim dominated areas some so called progressive thinkers keeping topics of importance wavering discussing such issues on tea stall, and those who has access to Internet do it on some on-line forum but it hardly comes into reality.

That night I presume I am no exception, and as my friends commented "all this discussions is to impress each other".

Let see how long it will take to fade this impression or are we ready to make this impression vivid?
